I just came back, the bus ride from Takayama-city to Shirakawa takes about 50 mins, and return ticket is JY 4300 yen. The ride is quite smooth, but you will have to pass by a lot of tunnels and one of them is very long, at least, in my opinion, close to 5km, but I didn't have the chance to find out the name of the tunnel.
Very nice to visit this place, and it is under World Heritage.....It reminds of the rumah atap we used to have back in the old days, but since this is more of cold winter with snow, there is a need for heat insulation. It also reminds me of some traditional houses in Switzerland.
There are many Taiwanese touring this area. And on the way back, there Chinese from Mainland, from Taiwan and from Malaysia (that's me), and it seems a bit funny, haha, that we are all in the same bus. I understood when the Taiwanese speak Mingnan yu, and the Mainland chinese understood when we all speak Mandarin......
This trip is quite nice, and this picture in mind, has finally come true....... I am happy and contented.
I like this picture

The "Atap houses" are heritage and the owner (mostly farmers there) inherited the houses from their ancestor. They will change the "atap" roof once every 20-30 years, that is one generation period of time, from father to son. The village will look even more fascinating during winter time with white snow on the roof. Looks like a fairy tale village.
